Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A passenger from Imphal, identified as O. Singh, aged approximately 50, died by suicide on Republic Day after jumping from the Departure Flyover at Kolkata Airport. Singh had arrived in Kolkata from Imphal on January 23 aboard a private airline flight. Sources confirmed that he had been wandering around the airport premises since the morning of January 26, the day of the incident, and had been seen roaming for several hours before the tragic event.
At some point earlier in the day, Singh was noticed by airport staff, and medical assistance was provided due to his disoriented behavior. After receiving the necessary treatment, he was allowed to leave the medical facility. However, later in the afternoon, Singh suddenly jumped from the Departure Flyover, resulting in fatal injuries. The fall caused severe trauma to his head, and he was immediately rushed to Barasat Hospital. He was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Upon hearing groaning sounds from below the flyover, security personnel and airport staff rushed to the scene. They discovered that Singh had already fallen. Despite heightened security measures at the airport for Republic Day, Singh’s movements had not raised suspicion earlier, and there was no immediate response from security personnel until the incident occurred.
Kolkata Police have begun an investigation into the incident. They are examining Singh's background and mental health, along with reviewing CCTV footage from the airport to understand the timeline of events leading to the suicide. The police are working to determine whether Singh had any prior intentions or indications of his actions during the days leading up to the incident. Authorities have not yet confirmed if Singh was staying in any particular area within the airport premises.
While the incident caused widespread shock among passengers, it did not affect flight services at Kolkata Airport. The investigation continues as police work to gather more information regarding Singh’s time spent at the airport and the security protocols in place during the period of the incident. The tragic event has raised questions regarding airport surveillance and how an individual could remain undetected for such an extended period before taking such an extreme step.
